Thousand Islands Winery "Abbey Gate" Memorial

Thousand Islands Winery, Alexandria Bay, NY remembers the 13 fallen service members who died three years ago at “Abbey Gate” in Afghanistan in 2021.
After 9/11, Thousand Islands Winery President, Stephen Conaway, US Army, Major, Retired deployed to Afghanistan from 2001 to 2002 with the 10th Mountain Division where he was awarded the Bronze Star.
Directly after the 2021 attack at “Abbey Gate, Kabul, Afghanistan, Steve and his staff felt a heartfelt need to honor his fellow “Brothers and Sisters in Arms”. So, he and his staff created a makeshift memorial in the Thousand Islands Winery Tasting Room’s Loft. Unbeknownst at the time, their memorial was combined with many other similar memorials from across the US. All of these memorials became a part of a viral article published on August 30, 2021 by the UK Daily Mail.
The article stated: “On August 26, 2021, 11 Marines, one Navy corpsman, and one Army staff sergeant were killed in a suicide attack in Kabul that also claimed more than 160 Afghan lives. The US servicemembers were on a mission of mercy to evacuate at-risk Afghans after the disastrous US withdrawal led to a Taliban takeover.”
