Zoo New York Announces Two Matching Grant Opportunities to Boost Memberships and Enhance Visitor Experience

Matching funds will double community impact to support family memberships and nature-based play for children.

Watertown – Zoo New York at Thompson Park is proud to announce two new matching grants that will support the Zoo’s mission of connecting people with nature through education, exploration, and play. These generous commitments offer the community an exciting opportunity to double the impact of their contributions—just in time for the start of the summer season.

The Northern New York Community Foundation has awarded a $10,000 matching grant to support Zoo New York’s 2025 Membership Campaign, launching May 1st. This gift, made possible by donors who are passionate about enhancing quality of life across the region, will match every dollar contributed toward membership during the campaign.

Zoo memberships offer a range of valuable benefits for individuals and families, including free year-round admission, discounts at the gift shop and café, free access or reduced admission to special events, and exclusive behind-the-scenes experiences. Membership tiers and details can be found at zoonewyork.org/membership

In tandem, an anonymous community member has pledged a $25,000 matching donation to support the development of the Zoo’s new Nature Playscape and other on-site enhancements. These immersive outdoor experiences will be designed to engage all five senses through natural elements like water, wood, rock, and plant life—encouraging curiosity, creativity, and healthy physical and emotional development. The playscape will also support increased visitation, volunteerism, and sponsorship opportunities for the Zoo. We are very excited to bring this project to fruition and provide guests with an additional experience.

“These matching opportunities reflect a growing confidence in the Zoo’s direction and mission,” said Executive Director Dr. Mark Irwin. “They show that donors and community members believe in creating a space where families can learn, explore, and thrive together. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference—and now, every dollar goes twice as far.”

Together, these matching grants represent a powerful investment in the well-being of local children and families. They promote accessible, healthy recreation while encouraging deeper community engagement through regular outings, memberships, and donations.

To maximize impact in 2025, now is the time to act. Whether it’s through a membership or a gift to the playscape, your support will have double the impact—helping to create a vibrant, welcoming zoo with additional experiences for generations to come.
