WATERTOWN, NY – June 27, 2025 — In a significant step toward addressing New York’s healthcare workforce shortages, Jefferson-Lewis-Hamilton-Herkimer-Oneida BOCES and the Caring Gene® initiative proudly celebrated the graduation of the first cohort in the Caring Gene® Career Pathways Training (CPT) program today at the Hilton Garden Inn Watertown/Thousand Islands.
The pilot class of 10 students marks the successful launch of the CPT program—a statewide initiative providing fully funded education and career support to individuals pursuing careers in 13 high-demand healthcare fields. Through full coverage of tuition, books, and fees, the program aims to eliminate barriers that often prevent aspiring healthcare professionals from advancing their careers.
“This program is about building opportunity and providing real access to careers in healthcare—careers that our communities critically need,” said Nicole Davis, Health Careers Coordinator at Jefferson-Lewis BOCES. “This first graduating class is a testament to what we can achieve through strong partnerships and shared commitment.”
The CPT initiative is made possible through collaboration between Jeff-Lewis BOCES, Caring Gene Healthcare Career Pathways, Inc., and regional healthcare providers including Lewis County Health System. Their combined efforts are shaping a more equitable and sustainable pipeline into the healthcare profession across Upstate New York.
Jerry Cayer, CEO of Lewis County Health System and Iroquois Health Administration member, emphasized the importance of this collaboration:
“We need to be proactive and creative in how we attract and support the next generation of healthcare professionals. Programs like this allow us to grow talent locally while investing in the strength of our regional healthcare systems.”
The program received a significant boost with a $100,000 investment from Lewis County Health System earlier this year, which directly supports the Licensed Practical Nurse program and enhances long-term workforce development.
Tosha Grimmer, Executive Director of Caring Gene Healthcare Career Pathways, Inc., also recognized the potential for statewide impact:
“This is just the beginning. The Caring Gene CPT program is about more than training—it’s about transformation. We’re equipping individuals with the tools to succeed, while strengthening care for every patient, in every community.”
