Little Theatre of Watertown presents The Importance of Being Earnest: A Trivial Comedy for Serious People

WATERTOWN – The Little Theatre of Watertown proudly presents a staged reading of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest: A Trivial Comedy for Serious People on July 31, 2025 at 7:00 PM. The fundraiser will be held in The Strand Theater at 136 Franklin Street in Watertown.

The play is a farcical comedy in three acts depicting the tangled affairs of two young men about town who lead double lives to evade unwanted social obligations, both assuming the name Ernest while wooing the two young women of their affections. It remains relevant today because it satirizes societal hypocrisy, superficiality, and the pressure to conform – themes that continue to resonate in modern society.

Its exploration of identity, particularly the tension between one's true self and the personas they adopt for social acceptance, is highly relatable in the age of social media and curated online identities.

Proceeds from the event help offset the increased cost of storage facilities for costumes, properties, and other equipment necessary in our season's full productions. Tickets are $10 general admission with a discounted $7 price for members, available for advance purchase online at littletheatreofwatertown.com or at the door.
