Watertown, NY - A longtime leader and advocate for the Lewis County Fair is being recognized at the state level for decades of dedication to agriculture, community, and fair traditions.
Doug Hanno has been inducted into the New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs (NYSAAF) Lifetime Achievement Award, one of the highest honors presented by the organization. This award was presented during this year's NYSAAF Convention, recognizing Hanno’s lasting impact on the fair industry across New York State.
Hanno’s connection to the Lewis County Fair began in childhood and grew into more than 30 years of service during which he held roles as director, treasurer, and president. Throughout his tenure, Hanno helped guide the fair through growth and modernization while staying rooted in its agricultural mission.
One of Hanno’s most influential contributions was championing the concept of a “Free Fair,” a move that removed admission barriers and made the Lewis County Fair accessible to all. The decision strengthened community engagement and attendance, and the model has since been adopted by other fairs throughout New York State.
Beyond policy and leadership, Hanno is widely known for his mentorship and hands-on commitment. Colleagues describe him as someone who consistently shows up, supports volunteers, and puts people first - qualities that have shaped not only the Lewis County Fair, but the fair community statewide.
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals whose dedication has left a permanent mark on New York’s agricultural fairs, and Hanno’s legacy is evident in the continued success and inclusive spirit of the Lewis County Fair.
NBC Watertown congratulates Doug Hanno on this well-deserved honor and thanks him for his decades of service to Lewis County and the fair industry.
