Watertown, NY – January 24 marks National Day of Education, a day dedicated to recognizing the vital role education plays in shaping individuals, strengthening communities, and building a brighter future for generations to come.
Across the North Country, education extends far beyond the classroom. From early childhood programs and K-12 schools to colleges, vocational training, and lifelong learning opportunities. Local educators work every day to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.
Techers, support staff, and administrators serve as mentors, role models, and advocates – often going above and beyond to meet students where they are and help them reach their full potential. Their dedication helps foster creativity, critical thinking, and confidence in students throughout Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties.
National Day of Education also serves as a reminder of the importance of access to learning for all. Programs focus on career readiness, special education services, and adult education continue to provide pathways for students of all as to grow, adapt, and thrive in an ever-changing world.
At NBC Watertown, supporting education is more than a one-day recognition. Through its Classroom Kindness initiative, we partner with the Northern New York Community Foundation to recognize and reward educators who are making a meaningful impact both inside and outside the classroom. Each year, seven local teachers are selected for their dedication to students and the community and are given a $250 classroom grant to help support their learning environment.
The Classroom Kindness initiative for 2026 will be open for nominations February 16 through April 3, giving the community an opportunity to help shine a spotlight on educators who go above and beyond for their students. The initiative highlights the lasting influence teachers have and reinforces the importance of investing in education at the local level.
As communities pause to recognize National Day of Education, it is also a time to celebrate students – their curiosity, resilience, and determination. Whether in the classroom, or on the stage, or on the field, students across the North Country continue to inspire with their hard work and achievements.
On this National Day of Education, NBC Watertown recognizes the educators, students, families, and community members who make learning possible and impactful. Their commitment to education today helps build a stronger tomorrow for the entire region.
