Groundhog Day 2026: Punxsutawney Phil Predicts Six More Weeks of Winter

Winter isn’t done with us just yet

Today, February 2, marks Groundhog Day, the annual tradition that people look forward to every winter for more than a century. And this morning in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, the most famous groundhog of them all made his prediction: Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, signaling six more weeks of winter.

According to legend, if Phil sees his shadow when he emerges from his burrow on Groundhog Day, cold weather is expected to stick around longer. If he doesn’t, early spring is on the way. This year the shadow appeared – and winter is holding its ground.

For those of us here in the North Country, that news probably comes as no surprise. With snow covered landscapes, cold temperatures, and more winter weather likely ahead, six more weeks of winter feels pretty on brand for Watertown and the surrounding areas.

Groundhog Day has been celebrated in the U.S. since the late 1800s and is rooted in European folklore tied to seasonal changes. While Phil’s predictions aren’t exactly scientific, the tradition has become a fun and lighthearted way to mark the midpoint of winter – and a reminder that spring, eventually will arrive.

In the meantime, North Country residents know the drill: keep the winter coats handy, brush off the snow boots, and embrace the season while it lasts. Whether it’s hitting the slopes, enjoying winter festivals, or cozying up indoors, there’s still plenty of winter to experience.

One thing is certain – winter isn’t over yet. But with each passing day, we inch a little closer to spring.
