Watertown, NY – Communities around the globe will celebrate International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the achievements, contributions, and progress of women across every industry and community.

The annual observation highlights the social, economic, cultural, and political accomplishments of women while also raising awareness about the work that remains to achieve gender equality worldwide. The day is recognized internationally and supported by organizations including the United Nations.

International Women’s Day dates back more than a century and has grown into a global movement encouraging individuals, businesses, and communities to celebrate women’s achievements and advocate for greater opportunity and inclusion.

Here in the North Country, women play a vital role in shaping the community. From educators and healthcare professionals to entrepreneurs, military leaders, nonprofit advocates, and public servants, women continue to make meaningful contributions across the region.

The presence of Fort Drum also highlights the leadership and service of women connected to the military community – including active-duty service members, military spouses, and civilian employees who support the mission both on and off the installation.

International Women’s Day is often marked by events, community discussions, and recognition of women who are breaking barriers, mentoring others, and inspiring future generations.

The day also coincides with broader celebrations throughout March during Women’s History Month, a time when communities reflect on the accomplishments of women throughout history and the impact they continue to have today.

As International Women’s Day is observed around the world, it serves as an opportunity for individuals to recognize the women who influence their lives and help build stronger communities.

NBC Watertown encourages viewers to take part in the celebration by recognizing the omen who inspire them and sharing stories of the leaders, mentors, and role models who help make the North Country a better place to live.
