Watertown, NY – Sometimes the best holidays are the ones simply meant to make people smile. That is the idea behind International Day of Awesomeness, celebrated each year on March 10.
The unofficial holiday encourages people around the world to celebrate the things that make life a little brighter – whether that is recognizing someone’s achievements, spreading positivity, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the awesome people in your life.
International Day of Awesomeness was created in 2007 by Kevin Lawver and a group of friends who wanted a fun day dedicated to celebrating everyday accomplishments and positivity. The date, March 10, was chosen in honor of actor Chuck Norris, whose birthday falls on the same day and whose larger-than-life persona inspired the idea of celebrating “awesomeness.”
Since then, the day has grown into a global social media celebration where people recognize coworkers, friends, family members, and community members who go beyond to make a difference.
Here in the North Country, awesomeness can take many forms – from volunteers who help local nonprofits, to teachers inspiring the next generation, to small business owners who support their communities.
It is also a day to reflect on the simple moments that make life enjoyable: helping a neighbor, cheering on a local team, or supporting the people who make the community stronger.
While International Day of Awesomeness may be lighthearted in nature, its message is simple: recognizing the good in others can make a meaningful impact.
NBC Watertown encourages viewers to join the celebration by sharing stories about the people who make the North Country an awesome place.
