Pi Day Celebrates the Famous Number That Helps Explain the World

Mar 14, 2026 09:00AM ● By Kenzie Shiver

Watertown, NY – Math enthusiasts, students, and pie lovers alike will celebrate Pi Day on March 14, a day dedicated to one of the most well-known numbers in mathematics.

Pi Day recognizes the mathematical constant Pi, which represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. The number is commonly shortened to 3.14 – matching the March 14 date – though it continues infinitely without repeating.

The day has become a popular celebration in schools, science organizations, and communities around the world. Activities often include math challenges, educational events, and of course, enjoying slices of pie as a playful nod to the number’s pronunciation.

The celebration was first organized in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Since then, the tradition has spread globally and was first officially recognized by the United States House of Representatives in 2009 as National Pi Day.

Pi plays an essential role in mathematics, science, engineering, and technology. The constant is used in formulas related to circles, waves, and many natural patterns, making it a key tool in fields, ranging from architecture to astronomy.

Educators often use Pi Day to make math appear more engaging for students, highlighting how mathematical concepts appear in everyday life.

While the holiday may be rooted in numbers, the spirit of Pi Day is about curiosity, creativity, and learning – with plenty of pie along the way.

NBC Watertown encouraged viewers to join the fun by sharing their favorite pie flavor or testing their knowledge by seeing how many digits of pi they can remember.
