Watertown, NY – Communities around the world will recognize World Down Syndrome Day on March 21, a day dedicated to raising awareness, promoting inclusion, and celebrating people with Down Syndrome.
The global observance was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2012 and takes place each year on the 21st day of the third month. The date was chosen to symbolize the triplication of the 21st chromosome, the genetic characteristic associated with Down Syndrome.
Down syndrome is a naturally occurring genetic condition that affects approximately one in every 700 babies born in the United States. People with Down Syndrome may experience developmental differences, but many lead active, fulfilling lives while contributing to their families, schools, workplaces, and communities.
World Down Syndrome Day focuses on encouraging greater understanding, acceptance, and opportunities for individuals with Down Syndrome. Organizations and advocates around the world use the day to promote inclusion in education, employment, healthcare, and everyday life.
One of the most recognizable traditions associated with the day is wearing brightly colored mismatched socks. Supporters participate in the “Lots of Socks” campaign as a fun and visible way to start conversations and raise awareness about Down Syndrome.
Advocates say the day is also an opportunity to highlight the importance of building inclusive communities where everyone feels valued and supported.
By learning more about Down Syndrome and supporting inclusive programs and organizations, communities can help ensure individuals of all abilities have the opportunity to thrive.
World Down Syndrome Day serves as a reminder that diversity strengthens communities and that every person deserves respect, opportunity, and the chance to be celebrated for who they are.
